The annual Blaydon Race takes place next Saturday, on the ninth of June, as the traditional Geordie song goes.
The race as we know it today has been organised annually by Blaydon Harriers & Athletics Club since 1981 and keeps the local tradition alive while delivering an annual race event run by top-ranking athletes and humble joggers alike, all “gannin’ along the Scotswood Road”.
From just 212 competitors in the 1981 race, it has grown to 4,700 runners who tackle the course each year.
The Blaydon Race route is 5.6 miles from Balmbra’s pub in Newcastle City Centre, along Collingwood Street and (of course) Scotswood Road and over Scotswood Bridge to finish in the playing fields on Shibdon Road.
I grew up in Blaydon and used to run the junior race as a kid. My Mam and stepdad/co-director Bill still live in Blaydon so it’s always been a special event for us.
