Building The Tyne Bridge – Fine Art Print by William Fawkes

The Tyne Bridge has become an iconic symbol of life here in the North East of England, straddling the city of Newcastle and town of Gateshead.

From artist William Fawkes:

The building of the bridge began in 1925, finishing with a grand opening in 1928. There is the larger Sydney Harbour bridge, which was being built around the same time but opened in 1932, and also features the same parabolic arch design. The image of the bridge has been hugely popular with tourists and replicated many times.

However I have not come across much original artwork which tells the story of it’s construction – in particular how workers had to cross tight-ropes without any harnesses to piece it together from the outside in. All whilst normal life below continued. incredibly only one person died during the three-year project.
